Steve Kirk and The Neptune pub have come of age together this week as he celebrates running the popular city centre venue for 21 years – and reveals it is about more than just the beer. Last year, to celebrate 20 years of being landlord, Steve threw a 12-hour party for customers but although celebrations for the 21 might be more low-key – being in charge still means the world to him. This year he contented himself with a heartfelt Facebook message of thanks to customers and the depth of support for him was shown by more than 1,000 people liking it and at least 270 people commenting. He wrote: “At the time (when I took on the pub) a lot of my friends thought I was mad as I left the railway after 22 years’ service with no redundancy pay, I borrowed around £30,000 so it was a big gamble. My dad gave me my inheritance money early and I’d like to think he was very proud of me. “I’ve made so many good friends who will be by my side till the day I die.
