Jeanne Kuang Delaware News Journal Published 6:00 AM EDT Jun 4, 2019 Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki’s long-awaited chance to get his administration’s signature legislative housing initiative passed by the City Council comes this Thursday, June 6. It’s his third try in two years to amend the city’s housing code to give the administration more power to fine property owners in efforts to clean up blighted properties. The bill passed out of committee last week, after sponsor Bud Freel softened the proposal by removing homeowner-occupied properties from the changes. Freel reassigned the proposal to his finance committee, helping push it to the floor. The legislation, which has been beset by controversy since the beginning, is likely to face opposition again from some residents and council members. Despite complaints, Wilmington mayor’s blight proposal advances Many of the speakers at Wednesday’s committee meeting still oppose the policy, saying it’s too broad and burdens responsible property owners. Supporters weren’t as vocal, but say the city has to start somewhere. “This is not a perfect bill but to do nothing and maintain the status quo, I think is worse,” said Alvin Hughes of the Trinity Vicinity Neighborhood Association.
