Jerry Carino Asbury Park Press Published 7:50 AM EDT Apr 6, 2019 OCEANPORT – Suheil Hooten promised herself she wouldn’t cry. And she didn’t, just barely. But as the Freehold mother of two told her story of homelessness and resiliency to 200 people Friday, her voice cracked with emotion. “I never gave up,” she said. “To all the churches who helped us, thank you so much. You guys provided meals. You guys provided volunteers who would talk to my children. You were with us when we had hard times.” The churches she referenced are part of Family Promise of Monmouth County, a network that houses and feeds families who find themselves temporarily homeless. The alliance consists of a day center and 13 area congregations that host families overnight. On Friday Hooten spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the nonprofit’s new day center, a 2,800-square-foot building on a two-acre plot at the old Fort Monmouth property. Her teenage children, Anthony and Tatiana Rivera, stood by her side.
