The owners of a Grimsby retail park have put a ‘future-proofing’ plan in action amid concerns for the sustainability of some of its current tenants. When planning permission was originally granted for the High Point Retail Park on Victoria Street – which is home to Curry’s PC World, Carpetright and Dreams – a condition was placed on it that food – apart from confectionery – could not be sold there. This was because of concerns over a lack of parking spaces available for such a store. But owners Canada Life Investment want to alter that so that should any of the three firms currently occupying the units close in the future, there would be an option for a food retailer to move in, which specific mention of ‘discount supermarket models’. Documents prepared on behalf of Canada Life and submitted to North East Lincolnshire Council as part of the application state: “As the Council may be aware, the three existing tenants are all facing challenging trading conditions for a number of reasons. Carpetright are presently in a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) and have been forced to close a number of stores in their portfolio as part of a major restructuring programme….
