WELL the fans turned up alright… what a pity the team didn't manage to do likewise. And if it hadn't been for a VAR call that was anything but conclusive, it really could have been a day when Pep Guardiola 's snappy mood turned into a full-blown rage. Guardiola, of course, has found himself in the eye of a storm in a teacup this week for having a dig at supporters for not packing out the Etihad for the Euro visit of RB Leipzig. Yet against Southampton he had a genuine cause for complaint…and it was all down to City's leaden-footed performance rather than a nearly sold-out Etihad. The team which had blasted 21 goals in the last four home games, dating back to the final match of the previous season, spent an afternoon banging their heads against a brick wall. Or rather a stonewall opposition backline…yet also an opposition which were unfortunate not to have nicked a priceless lead from the penalty spot, before that off-the-hook VAR call. How ironic, given Guardiola's pop at stayaway supporters, that the stadium was close to capacity too.
