Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted the one thing he learned from Jose Mourinho . Guardiola had been the Barcelona captain under Sir Bobby Robson and Louis Van Gaal, both of who had Mourinho as an assistant had the club. Mourinho had started as an interpreter but gradually moved into a coaching role, and he was largely responsible for the defence. However, when Moutinho was passed over for the top job at the Catalan side, in favour of Guardiola, the pair became bitter rivals. But, Guardiola has since admitted that Mourinho taught him one valuable lesson in his coaching career. “At Barcelona, the first coach that put me on alert to counter-attacks was Mourinho, with Di Maria, Bale, Benzema,” he told Gol. He added: “I’d think ‘careful’ when we lose the ball.” Mourinho and Guardiola’s battles in Spain changed Spanish football for the better, but the seeds were first sown at the San Siro. Mourinho ruffled the feathers of the Catalan when he ran the length of the pitch celebrating after his Inter Milan side dumped Guardiola’s side out of the Champions League .
